Hands-On Training on Security Software Based on International Standards Held as Part of the ITU Official Training Program

The Passwordless Alliance hosted the “Interregional Training Course on ITU International Standards” in Bangkok, Thailand, from February 11 to 13, 2026. Organized jointly with the Asia-Pacific Regional Office of the International Telecommunication Union’s Development Sector (ITU-D) and the Telecommunications Technology Association of Korea (TTA), this training is part of the official ITU curriculum. It was attended by information security officials and cybersecurity experts from the Asia-Pacific and CIS regions.

The three-day course covered two international standards: the X.1220 series on data protection (Storage Protection) and the X.1280 standard on passwordless authentication. The training focused on how to use standardized technologies to address common security threats faced by government agencies across countries, such as ransomware, data breaches, and phishing.

This course went beyond simply explaining standard theory. Participants also took part in hands-on exercises where they directly applied software implemented according to these standards in real-world environments. Through exercises on responding to ransomware and data breaches, as well as applying passwordless authentication to prevent phishing, they observed how the concepts outlined in the standard documents actually function within real systems.

On the first day, participants set up virtual servers on their own laptops and installed and configured file servers designed to prevent ransomware, allowing them to experience firsthand how data on their PCs is securely protected. On the second and third days, they installed and configured web servers and passwordless servers on the same laptops to experience firsthand how to set up passwordless authentication for a website.

Furthermore, the software used in the training was provided so that participants could continue using it in their home countries after the training concluded. Passwordless X1280 is a free product available for use in B2C online services worldwide, and FilingBox was provided after selecting software specifically designed for medical institutions and distributed to them free of charge. Participating countries received guidance on how to directly apply the technologies covered in the training to their domestic environments without incurring any licensing costs.

John Woo, Chairman of the Passwordless Alliance, stated, “I am pleased that international standard technologies and the software implementing them have been adopted as part of an official training curriculum by an international organization, enabling us to contribute to cybersecurity in various countries.” He added, “We will continue our collaboration with the ITU to expand the reach of these technologies to more countries and on-site environments.”
