Passwordless Alliance Participates in TTA’s “Passwordless Seminar,” Highlighting the Future of Secure Authentication

On March 7, the Passwordless Alliance took part in the “Passwordless Seminar: The Key to Next-Generation Authentication Security,” hosted by the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) in South Korea. The event served as an important opportunity to share the Alliance’s vision and technological capabilities in building a safer and more convenient digital environment amid growing threats caused by password leaks.

90% of Security Incidents Start with Passwords

Lee Jae-seop, Chairman of the Passwordless Alliance (former Director of ITU Standardization Bureau), opened the seminar by stating, “80 to 90 percent of all security incidents begin with the leakage of end-user passwords,” emphasizing the urgent need to adopt passwordless technology. The Passwortless Alliance is addressing these issues by providing the internationally standardized X.1280 technology free of charge to B2C services worldwide and introducing a new security paradigm where service providers, not users, bear the responsibility for authentication.

ITU-T X.1280: A New Standard for Passwordless Authentication

Woo Jong-hyun, President of the Passwortless Alliance, introduced the key features and technical strengths of the international standard X.1280. Many attendees expressed interest and shared positive feedback regarding the advantages of X.1280 technology, such as its ability to block man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks at the source, provide simple yet robust authentication, and eliminate device dependencies.
Kim Pil-je, Chief Technology Officer at Dualos and a member of the Alliance, explained how X.1280 technology can be applied across various B2B sectors, including integrated ID and access management and physical access control. He shared a case study of X.1280 implemented in the financial sector through KISA’s 2024 Zero Trust Pilot Project, demonstrating how the technology functions within a Zero Trust model.

Exploring the Present and Future of Passwordless Authentication

In addition, Senior Researcher Jin Seung-heon of ETRI provided insightful perspectives on the evolution of password technology through his presentation titled ‘The History of Authentication’. Presentations by Samsung SDS and the Korea Intellectual Property Strategy Development Institute explored the current state and future of passwordless technology, outlining the required advancements in authentication technology.

The Passwordless Alliance will continue to lead the way in developing and promoting technologies so that all users can enjoy a safer and freer digital life, free from the inconvenience and anxiety of passwords.

We invite continued interest and support as we move toward a truly passwordless future.
